Is a Disney Cruise Worth the Money?

When it comes to vacations that combine fun, relaxation, and magic, Disney Cruises have a reputation for delivering an unforgettable experience. Over the Christmas holiday, I had the chance to go on my very first Disney cruise aboard the Disney Wonder. From the moment we set sail from San Diego, it was clear this would be a trip to remember. With activities, entertainment, and top-notch service, the experience surpassed every expectation and left me eager to share the magic with others.

Setting Sail on the Disney Wonder

The Disney Wonder is one of the smaller ships in Disney’s fleet, but its size is perfect for creating an intimate yet vibrant environment. Our journey began in sunny San Diego, where the port buzzed with excitement. The process of boarding the ship was seamless, with Disney’s friendly staff guiding us every step of the way. Once onboard, we were greeted with a festive atmosphere that made it clear: this was going to be no ordinary vacation.

The Wonder’s size also worked in its favor—it was easy to navigate, and within a day, we knew where to find everything, from restaurants to the pools. This smaller-scale design made the entire experience feel more personal, something I truly appreciated as a first-time cruiser.

Exploring Port Cities: Ensenada and Cabo

One of the highlights of our cruise was visiting two stunning port cities: Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas.

In Ensenada, we opted for adventurous activities, including ziplining and horseback riding. The ziplining course offered incredible views of the rugged landscape, and the horseback riding was a serene way to experience the local culture.

In Cabo San Lucas, we took a more laid-back approach. The beaches were pristine, and we treated ourselves to relaxing massages by the water. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Disney Cruises offer excursions for every interest and energy level.

Even on port days, the ship remained alive with activity. While some passengers ventured ashore, others chose to enjoy drawing classes, trivia games, and poolside lounging. Disney ensures there’s always something for everyone, no matter how you prefer to spend your day.

Life Onboard: Amenities and Activities

The Disney Wonder boasts ten floors of activities, dining, and accommodations. Our stateroom featured a balcony, a perk that elevated the trip. Waking up to fresh ocean air and ending the day with breathtaking sunsets from the privacy of our balcony was priceless. For those considering an inside room, rest assured that Disney’s creative touches, like virtual portholes, make every room feel magical.

Food and Dining:
The food on the Wonder deserves its own spotlight. With a variety of dining options, from casual bites to gourmet meals, there was something to suit every craving. Rotational dining—a Disney Cruise staple—allowed us to experience different themed restaurants while keeping the same delightful serving team each night. It was comforting and fun to form a connection with our servers, who quickly learned our preferences (and even our kids’ favorite desserts).

My kids’ favorite part of the dining experience? The unlimited soft-serve ice cream stations. I lost count of how many cones they devoured, but their smiles said it all. For adults, there were plenty of healthy options and even gourmet dishes, making it easy to indulge without overdoing it.

Fitness and Relaxation:
For those who like to stay active, the Wonder has a fantastic spa and fitness center. I loved starting my mornings with a cup of coffee on Deck 9 while watching the sunrise before heading to the gym. There’s something truly energizing about a workout surrounded by panoramic ocean views.

Pools and Slides:
The top deck featured pools, a waterslide, and a splash zone for kids. While my kids spent hours enjoying these amenities, I appreciated the adults-only Quiet Cove Pool, which offered a tranquil escape for reading or sunbathing.

Unforgettable Entertainment

Disney is synonymous with world-class entertainment, and the cruise delivered on this front in spades.

Broadway-Style Shows:
The Walt Disney Theatre was home to nightly performances, each one more spectacular than the last. Disney Dreams: An Enchanted Classic was a standout show, weaving together beloved Disney songs, characters, and heartwarming storytelling. The quality of the performances rivaled anything you’d see on Broadway.

Movies Under the Stars:
On the pool deck, Disney screened movies under the night sky. Snuggling up with a blanket, popcorn in hand, and watching a classic Disney film with the sound of the ocean in the background is a memory I’ll cherish forever.

Character Meet-and-Greets:
From Mickey and Minnie to Elsa and Olaf, the character meet-and-greets brought pure joy to our kids. The interactions felt personal, with characters spending time to make every guest feel special.

Exceptional Service: A Disney Hallmark

One of the most remarkable aspects of our trip was the exceptional service from Disney’s crew members. From the housekeepers to the dining staff, every person we encountered went above and beyond to make our experience magical.

Our room attendant, Raymond, became a family favorite with his nightly towel animals and warm smile. Imagine our surprise when we later saw him featured on a National Geographic special about Disney Cruise Line’s crew! It was a testament to the high standards Disney sets for its team.

A Dream Vacation for Families

As a family of five, the cruise offered something for everyone. The kids were thrilled with the activities at Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, where they could enjoy games, crafts, and even supervised science experiments. Meanwhile, tweens and teens had their own spaces, like the Edge and Vibe clubs, offering karaoke, video games, and dance parties.

For family time, we loved swimming together, watching movies, and even participating in trivia games. Every moment felt thoughtfully designed to strengthen connections and create lifelong memories.

Many popular activities, like character breakfasts and spa appointments, fill up quickly. Book as soon as reservations open.

Budget for Extras:
While most meals and activities are included, some experiences, like port excursions and specialty dining, come at an additional cost.
